12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

Wisdom Equals Knowledge

For those of God’s children who choose to submit themselves to God and govern their life by godly wisdom God gives them the ability to know and understand things that not all people know and understand. He also gives them the ability to learn and create in a way that most people cannot, though this verse is not about that type of inventions. God enlightens their minds in ways that only He can.

“prudence” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is defined as and inclusive of the following:

1 : the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason

2 : sagacity or shrewdness in the management of affairs

3 : skill and good judgment in the use of resources

4 : caution or circumspection as to danger or risk

When you use wisdom, you are able to project the pros and cons of any given situation and act in accordance with what is most godly. Wisdom gives you the knowledge to know what is best and what is not; godly wisdom equals godly knowledge, which equals godly judgment. Wisdom gives us the knowledge to sense danger or when we need to use caution and care in a situation.

The “inventions” spoken of in this verse are not what one might first think of when you hear the word inventions. It is more about understanding in a godly way what is not seen in a situation or with a person. It can be applied to both good or bad, godly or evil.

“inventions” from this verse in the Hebrew language means the following:

4209. מְזִמָּה mezimmâh, mez-im-maw’; from 2161; a plan, usually evil (machination), sometimes good (sagacity):— (wicked) device, discretion, intent, witty invention, lewdness, mischievous (device), thought, wickedly.

A person trained in the use of godly wisdom has come into a godly knowledge that gives them the ability to read situations and people in such a way that they are able to make good quality godly decisions about both their actions and people.

Ephesians 4:11-16 NKJV

11And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

How Do We Make Godly Decisions? – Study of Proverbs 8:1-11– Can Godly Wisdom Falter?

1 Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? 2 She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. 3 She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. 4 Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. 5 O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. 6 Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. 7 For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. 9 They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge. 10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. 11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Can Godly Wisdom Falter?

When something falters it “stops being strong or successful” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Can godly wisdom stop being strong? Can it stop succeeding? Does godly wisdom falter?

Wisdom from the heart of God is continually calling out to us to be listened to, applied, and followed (v.1-4). To not harken to the voice of godly wisdom is to be simple-minded and foolish (v.5). Why the continual urgency from God for us to use His wisdom, godly wisdom?

Wisdom calls out with urgency because wisdom is the source of God’s Knowledge for the “excellence” of all things in our life. Wisdom is always “right” and never falters, wisdom is “truth” in all things, as well as “righteousness” for living (v.6-8). Excellence, right, truth, and righteousness can never fail you.

This “excellence” according to the Hebrew definition is “commands” that are “noble” and “honorable.” Therefore, godly wisdom speaks commands to us that we must follow. These “right” things that wisdom speaks to us is according to the Hebrew definition things that will lead to our “prosperity” in life. The “truth” that is spoken to us according to the Hebrew language is “sure” and brings “stability” to our life. The “righteousness” that godly wisdom brings to our existence according, once again to the Hebrew language is, “natural, moral, and legal equity and prosperity” in every sense. There is simply no way for wisdom to fail.

The value of godly wisdom far exceeds the value of our most prized gems. There is truly nothing earthly we can possess that will bring more value to our life, and spiritual speaking it is the greatest gift from God we can receive minus our relationship with and redemption by Christ.

How Do We Make Godly Decisions? – Study of Proverbs 7:1-27 – Another Exhortation

Another Exhortation

This piece will cover the entire chapter seven of the Book of Proverbs, as only one principle is focused on in the entire chapter. Once again, the author and God are warning his child against the use of worldly wisdom, no wisdom, foolishness, and against ungodly practices.

As you read this chapter keep in mind that godly wisdom and/or godliness is represented by the good woman and foolishness, worldly wisdom, and/or ungodliness is represented by the harlot. You might ask why a harlot so often represents sin, ungodliness, worldly wisdom, or foolishness in the bible; it is because to sin, to use worldly wisdom, to practice ungodliness or behave foolishly is to adulterate yourself with the things that are opposed to God when you belong to God, you are created by Him, and in covenant relationship with Him.

1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. 2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. 3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. 4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman: 5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

6 For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, 7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, 8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, 9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: 10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. 11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: 12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) 13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, 14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. 15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. 16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. 17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. 19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: 20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. 21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. 22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; 23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. 25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. 26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. 27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

In verse seven and eight we are given the visual of a person observing another person who does not use wisdom. How that individual is led astray into a life where they cheat on God; they cheat themselves out of being who God created them to be by going into a harlot aka ungodliness, sin, worldly wisdom, and foolishness. The folly of such a person often comes with the pretense of being satisfied with their self and okay with their conduct, however, self-loathing and shame are often cloaked in a nonchalant attitude.

Any conduct that goes against God’s Will, God’s Ways, God’s Commands, God’s Principles, and God’s Purpose is the ‘attire of a harlot’ in your life (v.10). The lure of what is opposed to God’s Way for you is very strong; it comes with false promises, the allure of fun, often in some manner pandering to your ego (v.21), yet in the end the results are horrible (v.23).

Worldly ways and worldly wisdom are extremely seductive (v.21). However, once they are done with you, they bring about a death blow to your life (v.23). Why did they choose the phrase of having one’s liver pierced? If the liver is pierced, you will most likely bleed to death from internal bleeding. The wound on the outside might be small without much or hardly any blood, but the damage on the inside can be fatal. Such is the way when we indulge worldly wisdom, sin, foolishness, and ungodliness; some area of our life ends up being killed, a part of us dies with each sin, we leave vials of blood at the resting place of each foolish action, and ungodliness erodes the good things in our life, relationships, work, our health, etc. (v.26).

Thanks be to God there is a cure, a way to avoid such a fate; the use of godly wisdom (v.25).

34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

Green-eyed Monster

Jealousy can create all types of evil. It can cause a person to steal, to cheat, to lie, and to kill. Verse thirty-four states that jealousy produces rage in a person. Men have an even tougher time with jealousy than women, but women have greater trouble with envy.

Verse thirty-four also states that it takes away a person’s ability to have empathy or sympathy for another person, it alters a person’s human feelings. The word “spare” in this verse means “to commiserate” with another person. Therefore, by the time jealousy reaches the point of vengeance the person has so nursed their inner rage to the point that it has altered their ability to understanding other people’s feelings, thus the jealousy cannot be appeased as verse thirty-five states.

Jealousy is dangerous in so many ways; relationally, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Jealousy can cause the death of relationships, other people, and yourself. Beware of and do not nurse jealousy, and never under any circumstances attempt to make another person jealous or give another person cause to be jealous.

Jealousy is a byproduct of a lack of contentment and a lack of trust in God. If one were content, they would not have want for what another person has. If a person trusted God, they would not believe that someone else has something they too should have and long for that which God has chosen for them not to have.

If you wish to defeat jealousy in your life replace it with by actively cultivating the traits of trust in God and contentment. Almost any character issue in life can be solves through the active cultivation of the positive polar opposite of the negative trait. Let the fruit of the Holy Spirit replace the fruit of the sinful carnal nature.
