Another Exhortation

This piece will cover the entire chapter seven of the Book of Proverbs, as only one principle is focused on in the entire chapter. Once again, the author and God are warning his child against the use of worldly wisdom, no wisdom, foolishness, and against ungodly practices.

As you read this chapter keep in mind that godly wisdom and/or godliness is represented by the good woman and foolishness, worldly wisdom, and/or ungodliness is represented by the harlot. You might ask why a harlot so often represents sin, ungodliness, worldly wisdom, or foolishness in the bible; it is because to sin, to use worldly wisdom, to practice ungodliness or behave foolishly is to adulterate yourself with the things that are opposed to God when you belong to God, you are created by Him, and in covenant relationship with Him.

1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. 2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. 3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. 4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman: 5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

6 For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, 7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, 8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, 9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: 10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. 11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: 12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) 13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, 14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. 15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. 16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. 17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. 19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: 20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. 21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. 22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; 23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. 25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. 26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. 27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

In verse seven and eight we are given the visual of a person observing another person who does not use wisdom. How that individual is led astray into a life where they cheat on God; they cheat themselves out of being who God created them to be by going into a harlot aka ungodliness, sin, worldly wisdom, and foolishness. The folly of such a person often comes with the pretense of being satisfied with their self and okay with their conduct, however, self-loathing and shame are often cloaked in a nonchalant attitude.

Any conduct that goes against God’s Will, God’s Ways, God’s Commands, God’s Principles, and God’s Purpose is the ‘attire of a harlot’ in your life (v.10). The lure of what is opposed to God’s Way for you is very strong; it comes with false promises, the allure of fun, often in some manner pandering to your ego (v.21), yet in the end the results are horrible (v.23).

Worldly ways and worldly wisdom are extremely seductive (v.21). However, once they are done with you, they bring about a death blow to your life (v.23). Why did they choose the phrase of having one’s liver pierced? If the liver is pierced, you will most likely bleed to death from internal bleeding. The wound on the outside might be small without much or hardly any blood, but the damage on the inside can be fatal. Such is the way when we indulge worldly wisdom, sin, foolishness, and ungodliness; some area of our life ends up being killed, a part of us dies with each sin, we leave vials of blood at the resting place of each foolish action, and ungodliness erodes the good things in our life, relationships, work, our health, etc. (v.26).

Thanks be to God there is a cure, a way to avoid such a fate; the use of godly wisdom (v.25).

34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

Green-eyed Monster

Jealousy can create all types of evil. It can cause a person to steal, to cheat, to lie, and to kill. Verse thirty-four states that jealousy produces rage in a person. Men have an even tougher time with jealousy than women, but women have greater trouble with envy.

Verse thirty-four also states that it takes away a person’s ability to have empathy or sympathy for another person, it alters a person’s human feelings. The word “spare” in this verse means “to commiserate” with another person. Therefore, by the time jealousy reaches the point of vengeance the person has so nursed their inner rage to the point that it has altered their ability to understanding other people’s feelings, thus the jealousy cannot be appeased as verse thirty-five states.

Jealousy is dangerous in so many ways; relationally, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Jealousy can cause the death of relationships, other people, and yourself. Beware of and do not nurse jealousy, and never under any circumstances attempt to make another person jealous or give another person cause to be jealous.

Jealousy is a byproduct of a lack of contentment and a lack of trust in God. If one were content, they would not have want for what another person has. If a person trusted God, they would not believe that someone else has something they too should have and long for that which God has chosen for them not to have.

If you wish to defeat jealousy in your life replace it with by actively cultivating the traits of trust in God and contentment. Almost any character issue in life can be solves through the active cultivation of the positive polar opposite of the negative trait. Let the fruit of the Holy Spirit replace the fruit of the sinful carnal nature.

32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. 33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

Man of Shame

It seems this adultery theme is staying with us. It has been covered in many ways in our review and examination of this chapter of Proverbs. God has it covered so much because it is such a destructive force in a marriage, but to be honest I would really like to be done with the topic.

Okay, just when I make my last statement things get interesting. Verse thirty-two states that a man who commits adultery “lacketh understanding” and that by doing so, committing adulty, he “destroyeth his own soul.” When I examined this “understanding” that the man lacks I find something incredible but so powerfully true.

In the Hebrew language this means that the man lacks, “a heart and feelings” the man lacks according to the Hebrew language both proper “will and even intellect” he lacks a proper center to his life, Christ. What is in quotation marks here is right out of the Hebrew language, who would have known that lacking understanding actually encompassed so much.

The soul is where the mind, will, and emotions reside and verse thirty-two say that as a man partakes in any form of adultery, he destroys his own soul. It is something he does to himself. Wow see the connections between the lack of understand and the destruction of the soul; soul equals the mind (the lack of intellect), the will (the lack of willpower), and emotions (the lack of heart and feelings), the connection is incredible.

Let us look closely in the Hebrew language at what this destruction of the soul actually entails.

“destroyeth” in the Hebrew language means:

“to decay, (causatively) to ruin (literally or figuratively) to batter, cast off, corrupt, destroy, lose, mar, perish, utterly waste”

Wow, that is some severe damage.

I have known men who got caught up with women who were not their wives, I have seen what it did to them, their marriages, and their wives; needless to say the destruction done to the marriages and the damage done to the wives is heartbreaking but in some ways it is equally sad when you see it take a man who was once decent at heart and turns him into something barely worth giving a second glance, he becomes so utterly rotten and diminished as a man. I guess what I am describing that I see in this type of man is what is talked about in verse thirty-three.

He becomes a man of no honour any longer. The verse says that he has a wound, which in the Hebrew means he is scared, he has a “figurative infliction” notice it is “infliction” not affliction, infliction means he will suffer due to what he has done. The Hebrew say he becomes “a leprous person” someone treated like they have the “plague” and I am sure there are many wounded wives who can attest to that truth, they did not want the adulterous man touching them for some period of time, if not permanently. Those women who did allow it are incredibly strong women, rare women, though should the man continue or repeat his adultery even very strong women may begin to find it almost impossible to be touched by such a man.

This “reproach” that the man suffers due to his own actions is something verse thirty-three states never goes away. I think many men and women who have gone through this horrible blow to marriage would both agree that even in cases where the marriage survived, which is rarer than one might think, and God brought proper healing to the marriage, the marriage is never quite the same; the man is never view without the stain nor with the honor he was once viewed.

In the Hebrew language this “reproach” is describes as “contumely, disgrace, +the pudenda:— rebuke, reproach (-fully), shame.” “Contumely” being “harsh language or treatment arising from haughtiness and contempt” – the contempt felt for a man who would do such is great on his wife’s part, his children’s part and in many cases even his friends or co-workers. I almost hate to go here but the Hebrew refers to the disgrace, shame, and contempt that is felt both toward the man and his “pudenda” which is his sexual organ. For a wounded wife the idea of having his sexual organ touch her sexual organ must be a painful concept; something once beautiful is now marred with ugliness.

Oh men, I urge you it is far easier to avoid this trap and save your dignity than it is repair your dignity and recover the look of love and sparkle in your wife’s eyes.

How Do We Make Godly Decisions? – Study of Proverbs 6:30-31 – Compassion for Stealing

In Biblical Principles, Chrisitan Lifestyle, Christian Living, Compassion, Decision Making, Proverbs, Prudence, Repentance, Stealing, Truth, Uncategorized, Wisdom on July 2, 2019 at 3:31 pm

30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; 31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

Compassion for Stealing

There are two very important points made here, that are both tied together yet also can stand independently.

Stealing is not just stealing. It is not always black and white. Verse thirty exhorts us not to be excessively hard on an individual who steals out of true need, such as the individual who steals food the eat. There is a difference between stealing out of need and stealing out of greed.

People can go through extortionary circumstances that will cause them to do things that under normal circumstances they would not do. We all like to think that we would not do this or that, but do we really want to be pushed to point that would be required for us to truly find that out? How many people have done things that they thought they would never, ever, do? Many, I assure you. Any person can be pushed to steal or do most anything if their circumstances are grievous enough.

In part verse thirty-one is where our laws of restoration have originated. If a person steals and is caught, they are to pay restoration, pay back what they took. This is so important according to Scripture that they are to give everything that they have (all the substance of his house”), if that is what is required, to repay what they owe.

For example, when a person files bankruptcy almost everything he or she owns is auctioned off to pay the creditors. This happens because the person took products, services, or money and did not pay the debit, thus the person stole from the creditor.

I leave you with this thought. When someone has done something do not be quick to judge that person as merely a horrible person, but instead make an effort to understand their circumstances, this is called compassion, and we are expected to have compassion on all people, not just the people we believe deserve compassion. Remember – There but for the grace of God go I – it just might be you one day despite all that you might believe about yourself to the contrary.
