9 He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.

Popularity or Prosperity

This is a very interesting verse that seems somewhat out of place, but we know with the Word of God there is no such thing.

First, it must be pointed out that in the Hebrew definition of the word “despised” there is an implied meaning and a figurative meaning. The word means both to be a person who is “light and in rapid motion” and also a person “held in contempt” who “seems vile” to other people. A godly person would fit both of those categories.

A godly person is going to be a “light” to the world around them. They are also going to be a person who is “in rapid motion” working to care for their family. They are not going to be lazy or a slacker. Being both a “light” in a dark world and a person “in rapid motion” to provide for your family will make you “despised” by a world growing more and more evil and distorted each day. However, it will also cause the blessings of God to rain down on you where you do not lack for the important things in life and may well also prosper to the point where having a “servant” is a part of your life.

This is a far better life than the “entitled person” who thinks life owes them, without their doing much of anything – the self-important person – those who “honoureth” themselves, usually because no one else does or should for that matter. These people lack for almost everything in life including “bread” or food to eat.

Haughtiness, pride, is a horrible sin that God absolutely hates. Many believe pride to be the very first sin, and it was in a way. Pride can typically be found at the root of every sin or every problem with other people in life. Test this theory and see if after you peel away all the various layers at the core of the issue if pride cannot be found.

Humility, God and godliness is the better choice in every circumstance over Haughtiness, Satan, and sin. Your life will be better the quicker you realize this in life.

Okay guys another movie review and recommendation for Christians and all people. Again, another movie that on the surface you would not think it is a Christian themed movie but it absolutely is Christian.

The trailer for the movie seems to be very odd but it truly is a good movie and well done. I am going to provide you with just a few bullet points about the movie because I do not want to give away any of the plot.

† Job – Modern day take on the book of and biblical character of Job.

† Trials – An examination of what it truly means to go through trials in our lives.

† Choices – An examination of the effects of our choices on our life and our very existence.

† Movie Type – Sci-fi version of end times, a disguised Christian movie meant to look secular, with a love story thrown in.

† Suffering – God revealed in suffering.

† Characteristics – The power of selfishness and selflessness.

Righteousness vs. Evil

In these verses the meaning as far as application to life is fairly straightforward. It is in an in-depth look at the definitions for the words in this verse that the nuggets of spiritual gold are found.

Hebrew definition for:

v. 5 “wicked”

7563. רָשָׁע râshâ˓, raw-shaw’; from 7561; morally wrong; concr. an (actively) bad person:— + condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked (man), that did wrong.

The fact that “morally wrong” is part of the Hebrew definition indicates that there is a moral standard. We as Christians know this to be true, but the world, and some people who say they are Christians, indicate that there is no concrete moral standard. They are wrong! God has clearly laid out a moral standard for humanity and there are consequences for not following that Standard and blessings for doing so.

Note that the definition states that the “wicked” persons referred to here are those who are, “an actively bad person” not a person who sins at times or does wrong on occasion. None of us are perfect and we are going to sin at times, though we do not have to do so habitually thanks to the freeing power of Jesus, but we are not a person who actively seeks to do wrong or is comfortable with doing wrong. There is an element of being “condemned” that comes with being “an actively bad person” or someone deemed to be a “wicked” person.

Wicked people are filled with “deceit” and they seek to deceive other people. Where you find a deceitful person you find Satan, the Father of Lies (John 8:44), deep at work. They cannot and should not be trusted because they are “feigned” (insincere or pretend) people. Deceitful people will always bring hurt to your life.

There is a right way to God in life and that is God’s Way. It is only through following God’s Standards for life that we can fulfill life in a meaningful way, in the way God intended. When we follow God’s Way for our life, He then delivers us in our time of need or distress. Following God’s path for our life makes our life “prosperous” as well. Note that to be prosperous is not just about money, it is about life, health, godly spirituality, relationships, all the things that make up life. Follow, look to, “the straight way” in life, God’s Way.

I want to focus in on the “deliver” aspect of verse six. Have you ever had God remove something from your life you did not want removed? There are times when God will “snatch away” something or someone from our life and at the time it appears to be a horrible thing to have happen to us. We definitely in these times view the snatching away as being done in “a bad sense” at least from our LIMITED perspective. Yet, after we wait a while, maybe years, we finally see that God in the snatching away of what we viewed as important or precious, was instead actually us being delivered by God from something or someone that did not need to be in our life, or that had its season for our life, was now over, yet, we had not yet let go of it, so God snatched it away. Whatever or whomever from which God sees to “deliver” us, is intended for the purpose to “preserve, recover, rescue, rid, save, or defend” our life in accordance with God’s Will. Trust God’s deliverance.

Hebrew definition for:

v.7 “overthrown”

2015. הָפַךְ hâphak, haw-fak’; a prim. root; to turn about or over; by impl. to change, overturn, return, pervert:— × become, change, come, be converted, give, make [a bed], overthrow (-turn), perverse, retire, tumble, turn (again, aside, back, to the contrary, every way).

It is the destiny of the wicked to be “overthrown” at some point and time. Perhaps, even to the point where they will “be converted” to God’s Way of life. When God makes your life “tumble” it is quite the tumbling, and life is never again the same.

On the other hand the life “of the righteous shall stand” thanks to God.

The absolute greatest security in the world and in the world to come is a relationship with Jesus the Christ.

V.8 “commended”

1984. הָלַל hâlal, haw-lal’; a prim. root; to be clear (orig. of sound, but usually of color); to shine; hence, to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; caus. to celebrate; also to stultify:— (make) boast (self), celebrate, commend, (deal, make), fool (-ish, -ly), glory, give [light], be (make, feign self) mad (against), give in marriage, [sing, be worthy of] praise, rage, renowned, shine.

Note that in this definition there is both positive and negative meaning. Since a person is “commended according to his wisdom” positive and negative would have to apply. “According to” indicate a degree and type of commending. For the godly wise this would mean they are “renowned” – “they shine” – people “sing their praise” – their wisdom is “cause to celebrate” for themselves and other people – they bring “glory” to God the giver of their wisdom. For those who lack in wisdom they too are “commended” for their lack of wisdom – they ”boast and thus tend to be clamorously foolish” – they show they are a “fool” – people tend to “rage” against them instead of praising them.

The wicked cannot give godly wisdom because their heart is “perverse” and not seeking the heart, will, and mind of Christ. This leads to them ultimately being “despised” by people, hence the “rage” people feel against them.

The wicked are their own worst enemy for they are “snared by the transgression” of their own life, their own “lips” not by other people.

v.13 “transgression”

6588. פֶּשַׁע pesha˓, peh’-shah; from 6586; a revolt (national, moral, or religious):— rebellion, sin, transgression, trespass.

Wicked people choose to rebel against God, to reject Christ, to live in “revolt – morally and religiously” on a daily basis. They have chosen “to break away from just authority” the authority of God, their Creator.

However, “the just shall come out of trouble” thanks to God. Note that it does not say they will never enter trouble or have trouble, what it says is that they “shall come out of trouble” and they shall, every single time.

2 A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.

In or Out of Favor?

To be in the favour of God is one of the greatest blessings in life. However, to be out of favour with God in the manner addressed in this verse is the worst, it is a form of condemnation.

Good people obtain favor with God. People who practice evil live with the condemnation of God. So let us look at what both the “good” and the “wicked” person looks like.

“good” in the Hebrew is defined as:

There are many characteristics to be seen in this definition to help you assess what a “good” person should look like. The main ones to keep in mind is that a good person is “kind” and” loving” toward people. They are “at ease” with themselves and others because they know their heart and life is pure, they are “good” inside and out. Some of the definitions in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary include “virtuous” and “of the highest worth and reliability” – yes, a person considered good in God’s eyes would be of great worth and would have to be godly as well as faithful.

“favour” in the Hebrew language is defined as:

7522. רָצוֹן râtsôwn, raw-tsone’; or

רָצֹן râtsôn, raw-tsone’; from 7521; delight (espec. as shown):— (be) acceptable (-ance, -ed), delight, desire, favour, (good) pleasure, (own, self, voluntary) will, as … (what) would.

The idea of the favor of God is a wonderful thing. It holds so much, much of which is beyond description. God has “delight” and finds the good person “acceptable” in His sight, taking “good pleasure” in having them as part of His family. He is “pleased with” that person because they have chosen goodness, godliness, in return or to pay Him back for the great sacrifice Jesus made on their behalf; they are in their small way trying “to satisfy a debt” they owe to Jesus by living for Jesus in a godly manner. Favor brings the ability to “accomplish” in life because God now “approves” of you, and He “delights” himself in you and allows you to “delight” within yourself. The favor of God is the greatest “pardon” in life, and it brings about the ability for God to “reconcile self”- meaning reconcile you to what you were created to be.

Again, to be condemned by God is the worst thing that could happen to a person in this life. Though to the wicked it is their lot, because by their choice, they choose to be a wicked person.

“wicked” in the Hebrew is defined as:

4209. מְזִמָּה mezimmâh, mez-im-maw’; from 2161; a plan, usually evil (machination), sometimes good (sagacity):— (wicked) device, discretion, intent, witty invention, lewdness, mischievous (device), thought, wickedly.

2161. זָמַם zâmam, zaw-mam’; a prim. root; to plan, usually in a bad sense:— consider, devise, imagine, plot, purpose, think (evil).

“machination” means to be a plotting, scheming, or maneuvering person.

For many Christians, myself included, we do things that are wrong, we even know they are wrong when we do them, but to have a mind and heart that sets out to do “wicked, mischievous, lewd” things, to actually “plan out evil” is a bit beyond my full grasp of understanding, yet I know it to be true of some people. My spouse use to say to me, ‘Why are you so surprised, so hurt, when people with an evil heart, do evil things that hurt you?’ I have never come to a place in life where it was what I expected from a person. However, for those who practice such evil, they live in the reality of God’s condemnation.

A look at what that condemnation looks like and how it might manifest in a person’s life.

“condemn” in the Hebrew language is defined as:

7561. רָשַׁע râsha˓, raw-shah’; a prim. root; to be (caus. do or declare) wrong; by impl. to disturb, violate:— condemn, make trouble, vex, be (commit, deal, depart, do) wicked (-ly, -ness).

God will have no part with a wicked person; His method of dealing with them is to “depart” from them in any positive or good sense. He does however bring “trouble” into their lives “to disturb” and “violate” their existence. God will “vex” their life, which is a very serious thing. To have one’s life vexed is a rough road – to vex means to bring “worry” to a person. It also means “to bring trouble, distress, or agitation, to bring physical distress, to irritate or annoy by petty provocations, or to shake or toss about” according to the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, none of which sounds like a way any person would want to live. God is judge however, and God has “cause to declare wrong” the actions of an evil person and deal with those actions as He deems best.

Each person has a choice to live as a “good” person or an “evil” person in accordance with the Standard for good and evil that God has set. What will your choice be?

Who Ends The Game With More

Far too many people look at life as a competition for who can have more, but more of what? For each person having “more” depends on what their heart tells them is important. For some it is simple, like my spouse used to say, ‘If I wake up in the morning it is a blessing from God, anything more I get is extra.’ If everyone could be so grateful to God for life.

As we have explored previously there are many people who obtain what they have through evil, wicked, and ungodly means only to have it all stripped away in an instant.

Righteousness, godliness produces fruit, righteous fruit. That fruit produces a “tree” or as the Hebrew definition includes “a stalk” of life, meaning the evidence or reward manifest in our daily lives (v.30). Let us take a moment to explore this “tree of life” and what “life” includes.

“life” in the Hebrew Language is defined as:

2416. חַי chay, khah’-ee; from 2421; alive; hence, raw (flesh); fresh (plant, water, year), strong; also (as noun, espec. in the fem. sing. and masc. plur.) life (or living thing), whether lit. or fig.:— + age, alive, appetite, (wild) beast, company, congregation, life (-time), live (-ly), living (creature, thing), maintenance, + merry, multitude, + (be) old, quick, raw, running, springing, troop.

Before I start down the path of writing about what it means to reap the rewards of righteousness through life, let me make this perfectly clear. I do not ascribe to the idea that some “religious, overly charismatic, legalistic people” have that if a person dies young, in middle age, dies some horrible death or due to some horrific illness that there was something wrong in their lives. That is legalistic nonsense that stinks in the nostrils of God. That said, there is biblical foundation for righteousness or righteous living providing people forms of protection and/or rewards. With that stated let us explore the implication of the definition for the word “life” in verse thirty.

There is little doubt that righteous living overall produces a “strong” individual spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. There is longevity of life that often goes with righteous living, as righteous living produces better health and a greater resolve to live. It also produces an “appetite” for life and the “company” or companionship, “congregation” to go along with and fulfill that zest for life. Righteous living is the greatest form of “maintenance” for the body, mind, soul, and emotions, there is absolutely no diet, vitamin, workout routine, etc. that can do a better job. Righteousness creates a “merry” spirit that is filled with joy and hope. A righteous lifestyle is our greatest chance at being “old, quick, and running” in our old age with a ‘spring in our step’ and as a true ‘trooper’ for the Kingdom of God. Righteousness will “preserve, recover, repair, restore, and revive’ us as individuals, our relationships, almost anything in life we encounter. Righteousness makes us to “surely be whole” this side of heaven and in the life to come, as the righteousness of Jesus imputed to us gives us a way “to live, whether literally or figuratively” in this life and will “cause us to revive” in the next life.

Who would not want people to have the type of life that was just described. Our hearts should burst at the opportunity to ‘win souls for Christ’ whenever possible. It is certainly a fruit of righteousness and an incredibly “wise” thing to do (v.30).

Righteous people have a reward not only in heaven, but they also have “recompense” right here and now while they are alive on the earth (v.31), as “earth” and world mean the same thing in this verse. World is part of the Hebrew definition for earth. Therefore, let us explore further what the righteous have to look forward to in the here and now.

“recompensed” in the Hebrew Language means the following:

7999. שָׁלַם shâlam, shaw-lam’; a prim. root; to be safe (in mind, body or estate); fig. to be (caus. make) completed; by impl. to be friendly; by extens. to reciprocate (in various applications):— make amends, (make an) end, finish, full, give again, make good, (re-) pay (again), (make) (to) (be at) peace (-able), that is perfect, perform, (make) prosper (-ous), recompense, render, requite, make restitution, restore, reward, × surely.

They can expect “to be safe” in their “mind, body, and estate” – estate being belongings, possessions, etc. They are “completed” in the spiritual realm and that completeness permeates their inner being, their spirit, their heart, and their soul. They tend “to be friendly” and that is “reciprocated” by others in various ways as they find favor with God and people. Other people long to, and righteous people long to keep relationships in good repair, thus making “amends” when needed or to “make good” on anything due someone, they seek to “be at peace” with people and live a “peaceable” life. Righteous people can expect to be made “prosperous” yet, as my late spouse pointed out prosperity does not always come in the form of money only, as far too many people mistakenly think. Prosperity can come in the form of family, relationships, work, health, too many ways to name, which yes, does also include financial prosperity. Righteous people experience “recompense” in this world, they are “rendered” reward(s) for that righteousness, God will “restore” their losses as He did with Job, “requite” is on their side as God avenges the wrongs done to them – “the righteous” see their “reward” in this life as well as the next.

The second have of verse thirty-one can be confusing for many people. If you look it up in various translations of the Bible you find the meaning varies widely, too widely for them all to be right as they contradict one another. I will make my explanation simple.

Just as the righteous get their reward on earth and in the afterlife in heaven, the wicked get their reward on earth and in the afterlife as well (v.31). Who are the wicked? Here is how they are defined based on the definition of the word “wicked” from verse thirty-one.

“wicked” has the definition of the following the Hebrew:

7563. רָשָׁע râshâ˓, raw-shaw’; from 7561; morally wrong; concr. an (actively) bad person:— + condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked (man), that did wrong.

7561. רָשַׁע râsha˓, raw-shah’; a prim. root; to be (caus. do or declare) wrong; by impl. to disturb, violate:— condemn, make trouble, vex, be (commit, deal, depart, do) wicked (-ly, -ness).

I believe the “wicked” person is pretty obvious when you meet and talk with them.

22 As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

Swine or Swan

If you are a woman let me ask you, would you rather be an ugly dirty swine or a beautiful white swan? If you answered the swine, you might as well stop reading now, but if you answered a swan, however, and are just not sure you are there yet, read on and let God work in your life.

Have you ever met a woman who walking by looks absolutely beautiful, and then you meet her, she opens her mouth, you spend a few minutes with her and see her inner ugliness, lack of intelligence, low character, ugly mouth, pettiness when it comes to life and other people, her shallowness, vanity, gossipy tongue, etc. and you just can’t believe that such a pretty package is filled with such an ugly gift inside.

An inner swine: you can dress her up, you can ply her with pretty jewels, but ugly is ugly and when you are ugly on the inside that is something that you cannot hide for long and something that will strip the bloom off the rose so to speak with people pretty quickly no matter how beautiful your face, hair, or figure.

I absolutely believe a woman should take care of her outer self. Her looks, her health, her figure, all of it, but more than that she should care for her inner self, her swan, that thing that makes women beautiful and appealing no matter what the outer package looks like.

Also when you look at what it means to be “fair” as described in this verse you see that it can be two fold, inner and outer. Note the physical, but then note the inner “to be bright” which is always a sign of inner beauty.

“fair” is defined in the Hebrew language is as follows:

3303. יָפֶה yâpheh, yaw-feh’; from 3302; beautiful (lit. or fig.):— + beautiful, beauty, comely, fair (-est, one), + goodly, pleasant, well.

3302. יָפָה yâphâh, yaw-faw’; a prim. root; prop. to be bright, i.e. (by impl.) beautiful:— be beautiful, be (make self) fair (-r), deck.

Discretion is the number one key to a swan, the key to inner beauty that cannot be match or outdone by outer beauty. Now a look at what discretion actually is and how it manifest itself.

“discretion” in the Hebrew is defined in the following manner:

2940. טַעַם ṭa˓am, tah’-am; from 2938; prop. a taste, i.e. (fig.) perception; by impl. intelligence; tran. a mandate:— advice, behaviour, decree, discretion, judgment, reason, taste, understanding.

As we look at what this means in the Hebrew language, we see that for a Christian godly woman discretion is “a mandate” – a mandate to use sound “judgement and reason” in one’s behavior and when providing “advice” to others. A woman of discretion is a woman who lives by a “decree” in daily life, God’s Decrees, about what she will and will not do, and is a woman who has “understanding” which in biblical terms is synonymous with wisdom.

“discretion” in the Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary is defined as:

1 : the quality of being discreet : CIRCUMSPECTION; especially : cautious reserve in speech
2 : ability to make responsible decisions

“discreet” is defined as:

1 : having or showing discernment or good judgment in conduct and especially in speech : PRUDENT; especially : capable of preserving prudent silence
2 : UNPRETENTIOUS, MODEST

A gossip or as some in church circles call it, the woman running around always talking about who we need to pray for and why, is not a woman of discretion by any stretch of the imagination. She is a gossip, plain and simple, doing much harm to the Body of Christ.

Women of discretion must take the time to use “good judgment” in what they will do and in how they go about life in order to “make responsible decisions” that will not negatively impact their life or the lives of others.

Lastly, a woman of discretion is a “modest” woman in her manner of dress. A woman who has half her cleavage hanging out, then gets angry or feels disrespected when men look, is not only foolish she is a swine and lacks the swan trait of discretion. If her dress is so tight or the hemline is so high that nothing is left to the imagination this is a swine woman not a swan woman, this is a woman without respect for herself or discretion.

A little tip ladies about swine women (women with no discretion, grace or class) verses swan women (women of discretion, grace and class). A good man, a Christian man, a man of quality will look at those swine type women, might even play with them here and there, but when it comes to the woman he wants to marry, the woman he wants as the mother of his children, these swine woman are not the type of women they want long-term. Almost all men want a swan.

Safety in Numbers, Really?

People tend to believe if they band together, they will somehow be safe. When it comes to God this is not true. There is nowhere to hide from God. There is no place that God cannot reach and no protection great enough to overcome Him or keep Him at bay if He desires to reach you.

“hand” in the Hebrew means:

3027. יָד yâd, yawd; a prim. word; a hand (the open one [indicating power, means, direction, etc.]

The wicked can attempt to secure their power by joining with other wicked people but none of them shall escape the wrath of God in this life and the life to come (v.21).

The “seed” as defined in the Hebrew language is:

2233. זֶֶרַע zera˓, zeh’-rah; from 2232; seed; fig. fruit, plant, sowing-time, posterity:— × carnally, child, fruitful, seed (-time), sowing-time.

2232. זָרַע zâra˓, zaw-rah’; a prim. root; to sow; fig. to disseminate, plant, fructify:— bear, conceive seed, set with, sow (-er), yield.

However, the opposite is true for the righteous. Their seed, in works, off spring, or people will be taken care of and delivered to its fruition.

Each day we make a choice of what type of fruit we will produce. We choose what type of life we will live, wicked or righteous. We decide if we are going to allow God to rule in our life by doing His Will. You will eat the fruit of those choices without escape, so choose very carefully.

18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

19 As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

Your Fruit Your Choice

Death and life in the figurative, moral, mental, emotional, physical (to some degree) and spiritual (to a small degree) are in your hands based on your choices you make each day. In these verses we see a contrast between evil and righteousness, between deceitfulness and uprightness and the resulting fruit of each.

Wickedness is deceitful, plain and simply. Many of their wicked acts require deceit.

“deceitful” in the Hebrew language is defined as:

8267. שֶׁקֶר sheqer, sheh’-ker; from 8266; an untruth; by impl. a sham (often adv.):— without a cause, deceit (-ful), false (-hood, -ly), feignedly, liar, + lie, lying, vain (thing), wrongfully.

8266. שָׁקַר shâqar, shaw-kar’; a prim. root; to cheat, i.e. be untrue (usually in words):— fail, deal falsely, lie.

Deceit takes on many forms but at its heart is something rooted in being dishonest with someone about something in order to gain an advantage in some manner. It is wicked to be deceitful despite what some might think; to lie, to scam a person, to mislead them, to deal with them in a manner that is morally wrong, or to cheat them in some manner. To be less than genuine or real, which is what “feignedly” means, is also deceitful. Deceitfulness has an air of vanity about it because people feel they are somehow entitled to treat others with such contempt.

Righteousness on the other hand is just the opposite. It knows that our true worth is only found in Christ and in obeying Christ’s Will for our life.

In the same language “righteousness” is defined as:

6666. צְדָקָה tsedâqâh, tsed-aw-kaw’; from 6663; rightness (abstr.), subj. (rectitude), obj. (justice), mor. (virtue) or fig. (prosperity):— justice, moderately, right (-eous) (act, -ly, -ness).

6663. צָדַק tsâdaq, tsaw-dak’; a prim. root; to be (caus. make) right (in a moral or forensic sense):— cleanse, clear self, (be, do) just (-ice, -ify, -ify self), (be, turn to) righteous (-ness).

Righteousness wants to see justice done, to make or cause things to be put right, hungers for virtue, is moderate in its dealings, actions, and lifestyle, seeks goodness and decency, which is what “rectitude” means. Righteousness wants to cleanse itself and wants to see the world cleansed from wickedness. Righteousness produces prosperity, not just monetarily but mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, relationally, etc. in so many manners.

That prosperity is there, a result, a fruit, of what is written about in verses eighteen, where it states that the righteous “shall be a sure reward” or shall have a sure reward. Righteousness is a reward to the person who is acting in a righteous manner and a reward to all who have the privilege of dealing with someone who lives their life by a morally righteous code based on God’s Word.

The Hebrew defines “sure” as:

571. אֶמֶת ˒emeth, eh’-meth; contr. from 539; stability; fig. certainty, truth, trustworthiness:— assured (-ly), establishment, faithful, right, sure, true (-ly, -th), verity.

539. אָמַן ˒âman, aw-man’; a prim. root; prop. to build up or support;

And the Hebrew defines “reward” as:

7938. שֶׂכֶר seker, seh’-ker; from 7936; wages:— reward, sluices.

The righteous person knows they can depend on the rewards of God. They will receive the wages for their faithfulness. Those rewards will flow to them from heaven’s throne to their daily life.

Righteousness will bring life to your life, just as evil will bring death to your life (v.19). Righteousness or evil are a choice, a choice that will bear fruit, a choice that must be made.

22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. 28 The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

The Greatest Blessing

Verse twenty-two must be examined very carefully, as well as in light of and in reconciliation with the rest of Scriptural Truths.

In the Hebrew language the word “blessing” in verse twenty-two is defined as:

1293. בְּרָכָה berâkâh, ber-aw-kaw’; from 1288; benediction; by impl. prosperity:— blessing, liberal, pool, present.[1]

God’s “benediction” which is also His approval is the greatest blessing we will ever receive from God. When you know you have it in general or in a specific situation it filled the soul and spirit with a feeling there is no way to describe. There is a wholeness that fills you (v.22).

There is also a spiritual blessing that comes from God. This includes our personal spiritual growth and growth in our relationships. This may also include growth in our ability to fulfill our purpose or accomplish a God-given God-driven goal. Part of the definition in the Hebrew for the word “rich” is “to grow” in some form to make rich, it does not specify that those riches are monetary in nature (v.22).

That said, I do believe that God takes care of His Obedient Children monetarily. Obedience is often the key to enjoying the blessing(s) of God. I have witness people change, turn toward God more fully, and have the finances of their life brought into order with easy, almost miraculously, therefore, I cannot deny God’s hand in His children’s financial state (v.22).

The way the blessing is brought about is key to knowing it is from God. It comes about without “sorrow” being attached (v.22). When you look at what that word “sorrow” refers to in the Hebrew language you see that the blessing from God often come without “usually (painful) toil; also a pang (whether of body or mind):— grievous” as “sorrow” as defined in verse twenty-two. Hence, my earlier statement about finances being brought in alignment with easy almost miraculously for those of His children trying to fully live for Him according to His Principles and His Will.

Our struggle with receiving our blessing comes when we refuse to obey and thus cannot experience the blessing of growth God wishes to bring about in our life or when we worry, worry, worry, instead of getting right with God and then trusting Him to put other things in our life right.

Turning our attention to verse twenty-seven we see that godliness or the lack thereof, effects a person’s longevity. When we choose to “fear” the LORD (YHWH aka Jehovah the Sovereign God) it means according to the Hebrew definition that we are choosing to show “moral reverence” for Him understanding His place and power in the universe.

That said, prolonging our lives is not to no end. When you examine the word “prolongeth” in the Hebrew language you see that the meaning “3254. יָסַף yâçaph, yaw-saf’; a prim. root; to add or augment (often adv. to continue to do a thing)” : – the purpose for adding days, months, or years to our life is so that we might honor Him, service Him, bring Him glory, it is for the purpose of continuing in something; ultimately it is for God’s Purpose not for us that He prolongs our days (v.27).

The opposite is found to be true for the wicked. Those people without the hope of redemption, their days upon the earth shall be shortened. Now what it means for those days to be shortened is very interesting and will take a good bit of examination of the Hebrew definition of the word “shortened” to grasp (v.27).

“shortened”

7114. קָצַר qâtsar, kaw-tsar’; a prim. root; to dock off, i.e. curtail (tran. or intr., lit. or fig.); espec. to harvest (grass or grain):— × at all, cut down, much discouraged, grieve, harvestman, lothe, mourn, reap (-er), (be, wax) short (-en, -er), straiten, trouble, vex.

Those who participate in wickedness will find that their days on earth are shorter than they had to be, days that are filled with ‘much discouragement, grief, trouble and vexing’ according to the above definition. A short sad life. It makes you sigh at the thought.

Verse twenty-eight reinforces these truths. The “hope of the righteous” is “gladness” in life and what the wicked can expect is to perish in many forms. The Hebrew definition describes that “expectation” as “literally a cord attachment” that brings about their end. This to me indicates little chance of escape. However, someone who is truly wicked beyond redemption most likely has no desire to escape from their wickedness.

What about the child of God who loses their way and wonders into wickedness or some form[s] of ungodliness. They too may find themselves or their life perishing in various forms. When you look at the word “perish” in the Hebrew language you find that it means the following:

“perish”

6. אָבַד ˒âbad, aw-bad’; a prim. root; prop. to wander away, i.e. lose oneself; by impl. to perish (caus. destroy):— break, destroy (-uction), + not escape, fail, lose, (cause to, make) perish, spend, × and surely, take, be undone, × utterly, be void of, have no way to flee.

How can the Wayward Christian relate to this definition? When we get caught up in sin, one sin or one hundred sins, it does each of these things described in the definition to our life.

a) We “lose oneself” losing site of who we are, a Christian, and whose we are, God’s child. As we “ wander away” from God into our sin we begin to lose purpose and direction for our life. This leads to us seeing aspects of our life begin “to perish” aka go away or cease to exist or “cause to be destroyed” in some manner.

b) Our sin will “break” parts of our faith, our resolve, our life structure, relationships, etc. Sin will always bring about some form of “destruction” to the life of the person sinning.

c) Sin often so enfolds a person that they begin to feel they will “not escape” its grasp, it causes them to “be void of” the hope, goodness, and courage they once felt God’s grace shed upon them, leaving them with the false belief, Satan’s lie, that they “have no way to flee” from what their life has become, yet they do, that way is called REPENTANCE, turning away from the sin and back to God.

d) There is no doubt that your sin or sins will cause you to “fail” in life in many, many areas. Repeated failure can break the spirit of a Wayward Christian.

e) Finally, continual sin will lead the Wayward Christian to “be undone” in the end if they fail to repent from their sin and turn back to God and God’s Will for their life.

We are blessed if we have “the fear of the Lord” because with a proper fear of the Lord we will seek to honor the Lord with our life, which will lead to the blessing of the Lord upon our life; for even when we are wayward and lost in sin that “fear of the Lord” will be the tool that God uses to bring us to repentance and back to Him, where we can once again experience His “blessing,” God’s “benediction” aka His approval and “blessing” in life and upon our life.

2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death. 3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

Temporary Treasure

Christians no doubt see those who appear wicked, who seem to care nothing for the things of God, become wealthy and roll in the lap of luxury. They must ask themselves why? Why not the godly?

Some godly people are wealthy and enjoy the luxuries of life. However, more than not, do not find themselves in this group. I do not think it is important to know why, but instead to focus on what God says about ill gotten gains.

The “treasures of wickedness” have no true value in life (v.2). As verse two states they “profit nothing” which when you examine those words in the Hebrew language means that they hold no, “rightness, rectitude, objectively justice, moral virtue or figuratively aka spiritually prosperity.” (Interesting side note the reference number used for the word “nothing” is “6666” – as in 666.) These types of treasures have no real value in life, only earthly worldly value.

In contrast “righteousness delivereth from death” (v.2). When the meaning of “death” in this verse is examined in the Hebrew language we come to realize that it is addressing ‘certain types of death (both natural or violent); or being among the dead, their place or state in hades aka hell and figuratively pestilence or ruin.’ How many wicked people do you often see come to utter ruin within a few days (v.3-4). It happens often actually if you pay attention. They ride high and crash hard.

I am going to jump to verse five now for a moment. Wise people are people who gather their resources, work hard, and do not squander what they have been given by God (v.5). Whereas, lazy people are a cause of “disappointment” to God and those who know them (v.5).

God satisfies the soul of the righteous, He meets their need (v.3). That does not mean that God is going to give a Christian everything they want. I am confident you have heard the say, ‘Thank God for unanswered prayers.’ God knows what is best for us and often denies us out of love.

Those who are righteously “diligent” I add “righteously because any interpretation of Scripture must be taken in context; the Christians who are righteously diligent God will “maketh rich” (v.4). Again, what do the words mean in the Hebrew language? Looking into “maketh rich” in the Hebrew we can gather no general meaning since the word “rich” is not defined. I think this is intentional on God’s part. The riches that God gives His righteous people are beyond worldly, they are indescribable.

1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Child that Blesses or Burdens

Whether a child is growing into adulthood or has already obtained adulthood that child can be a blessing to their parents or a burden to their parent. At either stage of life the desire of children should be to be a blessing to their parents. However, do we live up to that inner desire that beckons to us?

We can make our parents glad or we can fill them with a heaviness of soul and spirit. What does it mean biblically in this context to make them glad or fill them with heaviness? Let us explore that.

In the Hebrew language the words “glad” and “heaviness” mean the following.

8055. שָׂמַח sâmach, saw-makh’; a prim. root; prob. to brighten up, i.e. (fig.) be (caus. make) blithe or gleesome:— cheer up, be (make) glad, (have, make) joy (-ful), be (make) merry, (cause to, make to) rejoice, × very.

8424. תּוּגָה tûwgâh, too-gaw’; from 3013; depression (of spirits); concr. a grief:— heaviness, sorrow.

We have previously thoroughly studied what it means to be both wise and foolish. Keep in mind that you are a parent or might be a parent one day. I will make this simple and close by asking a few questions you can reflect on.

Do your actions brighten up your parent’s world? Do they cause them happiness and joy? Do you make them glad you are their child? Can they rest knowing they do not have to worry about you? Or do your actions make their spirits heavy with sorrow and grief? Does depression haunt them because you cannot get your act together?

As you reflect on these questions remember that our life affects the life of all those around us, including our parents, whether we are grown or not, so let us make choices that bless people instead of burdening people.

13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing. 14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city, 15 To call passengers who go right on their ways: 16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, 17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. 18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Foolish Man Foolish Woman Equals Hell

Ever wondered why men are so easily taken with silly, dumb, or dumb acting, women who hang on their very word? Because when it comes to women men are often led by their lust not by their intelligence, wisdom, or the Spirit of God. They are drawn to the seduction these women offer, “stolen waters” that they should be tampering with (v.14-17). However, man’s foolish response to a foolish woman leads them both to the “depths of hell” and rightfully so; why should foolishness be rewarded (v.18).

Now fair warning here, the descriptions from the Hebrew language of the “foolish woman” who is “clamorous” and “simple” is pretty harsh (v.13). There is no doubt many women or men for that matter will identify with what it is to be “foolish, clamorous, and simple” on some level and to some degree. However, if we recognize these things in ourselves, we need to pray for God to remove them, repent, and turn away from such behaviors.

To be “foolish” equals “silly, be foolish, probably fat, figuratively stupid” in the Hebrew. When I saw the definition it all made sense expect for one part, “probably to be fat” then the revelation; if one is fat there are acts of foolishness on that person’s part hat led to that condition and being fat show a lack of discipline and self-control over the body (with rare legitimate medical exceptions). Hard to write, hard to admit, but true in most cases.

To be “clamorous” in the Hebrew is defined as:

1993. הָמָה hâmâh, haw-maw’; a prim. root [comp. 1949]; to make a loud sound (like the English “hum”); by impl. to be in great commotion or tumult, to rage, war, moan, clamor:— clamorous, concourse, cry aloud, be disquieted, loud, mourn, be moved, make a noise, rage, roar, sound, be troubled, make in tumult, tumultuous, be in an uproar.

1949. הוּם hûwm, hoom; a prim. root [comp. 2000]; to make an uproar, or agitate greatly:— destroy, move, make a noise, put, ring again.

The English “hum” would be something like a sigh that we do in America, a sound meant to express some form of displeasure.

Tumultuous means to lack restraint.

My only response to this definition, ouch!

The meaning of “simple” in the Hebrew as it relates to the woman is “silliness in a seductive way” which leads us back to my opening the “dumb blonde” act (v.13-15 )– absolutely no offense meant at all toward blonde women, but it is term people know and understand the cultural meaning of in America. As far as the word relates to men who respond to this type of women; to be “simple” on their part mean to be “silly, foolish, and deluded” (v.16).

Women would be far better off to not conduct themselves in clamorous ways and men would be far better off not to be taken in by seductive daisy who will only lead them to hell.

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. 11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. 12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

Security and Long Life

The starting point for wisdom is to have a proper fear of God. Without a proper fear of God you will most likely not be someone given to the use of godly wisdom. People who mock and scorn the things of God are people who usually act in very foolish prideful manners thinking they have life all figured out.

Fearing the LORD, Jehovah, has different aspects to its dynamics (v.10). Before I go into to those aspects let me provide you with the definition of this word “fear” found in verse ten from the Hebrew language.

“fear” in the Hebrew language means:

3374. יִרְאָה yir˒âh, yir-aw’; fem. of 3373; fear (also used as infin.); mor. reverence:— × dreadful, × exceedingly, fear (-fulness).

3373. יָרֵא yârê˒, yaw-ray’; from 3372; fearing; mor. reverent:— afraid, fear (-ful).

3372. יָרֵא yârê˒, yaw-ray’; a prim. root; to fear; mor. to revere; caus. to frighten:— affright, be (make) afraid, dread (-ful), (put in) fear (-ful, -fully, -ing), (be had in) reverence (-end), × see, terrible (act, -ness, thing).

When we fear the LORD, we have a moral reverence for Him, His Ways, His Purposes, His Will, and His Wisdom. We have a keen sense of the Almighty’s power and position in the universe and rightfully fear what that power is capable of if need be in the face of evil. God loves, but God is not a marshmallow man or a teddy bear He is the HOLY ALMIGHTY GOD and we should be afraid both for other people and ourselves should they or we fail to follow God’s wisdom. We can learn to fear God by learning about and understanding His character or we can learn to fear God through painful trial and error, it is our choice.

To have “knowledge” of the holy is, according to the Hebrew language, to have awareness of the holiness of God and the sacredness of the things of God (v.10). This is where getting to know God, His Ways, His Character, His Purposes, and His Word is important. There is truly no other way to come to a proper understanding of God. Having this type of “knowledge” about God’s and God’s holiness is “understanding” and according to the Hebrew language understanding is a form of “wisdom” (v.10).

The use of wisdom comes with a spiritual law and effect or what some might call a promise. It is more of a spiritual law than a promise. The use of wisdom will lead to a much greater chance of a longer life (v.11). If we do what God directs that is best for us, wise, live according to His Will not our own will or desires, we are likely to live much longer, and I dare say have a much better quality of life along the way.

There is security in the use of wisdom. If you use godly wisdom under God’s guidance following His directives and things “appear” to go wrong, I use the word appear because if you are following God’s Wisdom any difficulties you face have a godly purpose, thus God will be with you in the mist of the difficulty to guide you through and show you His Purpose for allowing the difficulty (v.12).

1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: 2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. 3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city, 4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, 5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. 6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. 7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. 8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. 9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Brains or Ignorance

Wisdom upholds our life, our house, on this earth (v.1). It will slay our dragons in life, it gives life the proper flavoring, and it provides for our needs (v.2). Wisdom cries out to be heard in our life, in our hearts, in our minds, and in our spirits (v.3).

Only the silly, foolish, stupid man or woman refuses to listen to wisdom (v.4). However, those who truly want “understanding” in life turn to wisdom and seek it out (v.4). Wisdom welcomes us, and wisdom will never be withheld from anyone who truly desire the wisdom found in God (v.5 and James 1:5).

“understanding” as found in verse four is defined in the Hebrew as:

3820. לֵב lêb, labe; a form of 3824; the heart; also used (fig.) very widely for the feelings, the will and even the intellect; likewise for the center of anything:— + care for, comfortably, consent

God is willing to meet all of our needs in life through the use of godly wisdom if we will only allow Him to do so. It is the only true way to live a life that one would consider actually living (v.6). The definition of the word “understanding” in verse six is proof of that.

“understanding” as found in verse six is defined in the Hebrew as:

998. בִּינָה bı̂ynâh, bee-naw’; from 995; understanding:— knowledge, meaning, × perfectly, understanding, wisdom.

If we wish our life to have perfect meaning, we will use godly wisdom.

Foolish people, ignorant people, cannot stand to be corrected or told their actions are wrong (v.7). They react with hatred at the idea that they have done someone wrong, or sinned, or acted inappropriately, etc. (v.7) whereas, a wise person embraces the possibility to learn how to be a better person; the foolish think they have or had it all figured out at twenty-four and need no improvement, how dare lesser minds correct them (v.8).

Godly wisdom and the person with true brains who uses that godly wisdom always grows mentally, spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally. They always want to grow; they always want to be better in character and do better in their life choices.

How Do We Make Godly Decisions? – Study of Proverbs 8:22-36 – Source and Fruit of Wisdom

22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. 23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. 24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: 26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. 27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; 31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. 33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. 34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. 35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. 36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Source and Fruit of Wisdom

Keep in mind that this is Wisdom talking to you from the pages of Proverbs. Therefore, when He/it states, “The LORD possessed me” (v.22) it is stating that Jehovah, which is who the LORD in the Old Testament is when you find it written in all capital letters, possessed wisdom in the greatest possible measure since the beginning of time, and before (v.23-30).

Whom else was with God from the beginning of time and before as wisdom was? Yes, Jesus, the Christ, our Savior, and in New Testament times, our Lord.

Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:1), Jesus is Wisdom, God’s incarnated wisdom (1 Corn. 1:24).

Like Wisdom (v.22-30) Jesus was with God, LORD, Jehovah since the beginning.

Just as we need to listen to, follow, and obey Wisdom (v.32-36), we need to listen to, follow, and obeying Jesus in how we live, as Jesus is Truth, Jesus is the Word, Jesus is Wisdom.

If you lack godly wisdom all you must do is, ask God for it and He will give it to you (James 1:5).

The very last verse of this passage is so strong in its examination of the human condition that I am going to quote it again here.

“36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.”

The person who chooses to reject Wisdom, to sin against the Almighty/Wisdom by rejecting godly wisdom is a person who sins against their own soul. To “wrongeth” our soul according to the Hebrew language means to ‘violently mistreat ourselves’, which is often done physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually when we use poor discernment and wisdom. It also means that we “make bare” aspect of our life that would flourish if we used godly wisdom. When we refuse God’s godly wisdom we “shake off” and “violate” His Will and thus damage our soul, as we enter into vain imaginations, ‘imagining wrongly’ what our life should be through our own limited lenses instead of through the Mind of Christ and the Wisdom of Jehovah God.

“wrongeth” Hebrew definition is as follows:

2554. חָמַס châmaç, khaw-mas’; a prim. root; to be violent; by impl. to maltreat:— make bare, shake off, violate, do violence, take away violently, wrong, imagine wrongfully.

Wisdom, wisdom, wisdom we must use wisdom, our life, the quality of our life, depends upon doing so!
